# Add or edit a shift

> Use the rota form to schedule a shift, change it or delete it

The rota form opens when you add a shift or edit one from [My Rota](https://support.rotapad.com/my-rota.md). It has three sections: **Assignment**, **Schedule** and **Details**.

## Add a shift

**1. Open the form**

In **My Rota**, click **⋮** then **Add Rota**. On a phone, tap the round **+** button.

**2. Choose where**

Pick the **Customer**, then the **Home**. The list of homes only shows the chosen customer's homes.

**3. Check who**

**Staff** is filled in for you and locked. It's the staff member chosen in the filter bar, or you if nobody is chosen.

**4. Set the date and times**

Pick the **Date**, then the **Start time** and **End time**. The hours are worked out for you when you save.

**5. Add the details**

Choose the **Type** and add an optional **Comment** for the team.

**6. Save**

Click **Create rota**. The staff member gets an email about the new shift.

> [!TIP]
>
> To add a shift for someone else, choose them in the bar at the top of **My Rota** first, then click **Add Rota**.

## Enter a time

Click the time box to pick from a list in 15-minute steps, or type the time. All of these work:

| You type | You get |
| - | - |
| `7` | 07:00 |
| `730` or `7:30` | 07:30 |
| `19.30` | 19:30 |
| `7:30pm` or `7p` | 19:30 or 19:00 |

For the end time, each option shows the shift length next to it, for example **19:30 · 12h 30m**. If you type a time that isn't on the list, such as `07:07`, choose **Use 07:07**.

## Shift types

| Code | Type |
| - | - |
| **SS** | Short Shift |
| **LD** | Long Day |
| **LDS** | Long Day & Sleep |
| **WN** | Waking Night |
| **SL** | Sleep |

## Night shifts and sleep-ins

You don't need to set these yourself:

* **Night shifts** - If the end time is earlier than the start time, such as 20:00 to 08:00, the shift is counted as finishing the next day.
* **Sleep-ins** - Shifts with the type **Long Day & Sleep (LDS)** or **Sleep (SL)** are marked as sleep-ins automatically.

## Edit a shift

1. In **My Rota**, click **✎** on the shift's row, or double-click the row.
2. Change what you need.
3. Click **Save changes**.

**Save changes** stays greyed out until you change something.

## Delete a shift

1. Open the shift as above.
2. Click **Delete** at the bottom left.
3. Click **Delete** again to confirm.

You can also delete straight from the table with the **🗑** button.

> [!NOTE]
>
> Only team leads, support and admins can edit or delete shifts. Staff can add shifts for themselves. See [Roles and permissions](https://support.rotapad.com/roles-and-permissions.md).
